History of the Office of Faculty Development

The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) was established as part of the Office of the Provost in August 2008. Its goal is to provide NC State faculty with access to a range of development opportunities provided by OFD and a number of other NC State offices and programs. It will also assume important functions of the Faculty Center of Teaching and Learning, which has been subsumed under the OFD. OFD will offer programs addressing teaching and learning and other areas of faculty work, alone or in conjunction with other NC State offices. The Office of Faculty Development was established in response to the Working Group on Faculty Development, which proposed the following statement about faculty development at NC State:

“Through faculty development, NC State enables continuous fulfillment and growth towards excellence in all realms of faculty responsibility in support of the university’s mission by:

  • focusing on the institution’s responsibility to provide the resources, activities, and support services necessary for faculty growth and excellence
  • acknowledging all realms of faculty responsibility as the scope of faculty development
  • recognizing that, in addition to support for individual faculty member’s professional growth and development, faculty development provides opportunities for faculty members to contribute to the university’s achievement of its mission and goals.”

from Faculty Development at NC State: An Institutional Commitment Report of the Working Group on Faculty Development, January 15, 2008

The Working Group recommended that NC State establish a comprehensive faculty development program to serve as an umbrella for faculty development programs across campus and coordinate its activities with other divisions and the colleges.
