Definition: A peer coach is an instructor who serves as a coach for other NC State instructors and who is willing to allow other faculty to visit his or her classes to observe their teaching.
Peer coaches:
- Volunteer by submitting an application requesting to be a peer coach.
- Applications should be accompanied by a copy of the coach’s course syllabus (for one or more courses that are candidates for reciprocal observations).
- Attend a 1 day training workshop during “reading days” on December 6, 2011.
- Prior to, during, or after the training workshop, peer coaches will:
- Review related articles (prior to the workshop).
- Work collaboratively to adjust a standard observation protocol for use in the peer coaching program.
- Complete observations of class videos and discuss scoring interpretations.
- Identify a suite of features typically associated with effective teaching.
- Write a one-page summary of their teaching practices and philosophy (after workshop).
Each peer coach will work with up to three scholars (or three reciprocal visits) over a twelve-month interval and would attend training and receive $1000 (non-stipend) in resources for instructional development or scholarship related to teaching and learning for their participation in the program.
Toward the end of the 12 months, the peer coach would complete an anonymous online assessment of his/her experience in the program.
