Each year, faculty members are invited to join the Office of Faculty Development for a few days to focus on a topic around best practices in teaching. The 2012 Summer Institute is entitled “Making Your Teaching your Research.”
Archived information on the 2011 Summer Institute can be found here.
Program Background
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Summer Institute is designed to provide an opportunity for NCSU instructors to work collaboratively with peers to develop successful research projects focusing on teaching and learning. The SoTL Institute will meet for four days in late May (May 22, 24, 29, 31). The Institute will address examples of research linking teaching strategies to student learning and will discuss the assessment of student learning and dissemination of research results. Instructors will examine successful examples of SoTL, the development of suitable research questions, and the design of SoTL projects for their classes.
The Summer Institute is open to all NCSU faculty members, regardless of previous experience with work on the scholarship of teaching and learning. We particularly encourage applications from instructors who seek to initiate research on their teaching. Participants who develop an operational SoTL project by the completion of the institute will receive $1000 to cover expenses required to execute their research project.
Instructors in many programs already embed teaching and learning research in their courses. The summer institute seeks to provide additional faculty with the training and resources to begin research on teaching and learning in their classes and/or to support the assessment of existing teaching strategies.
Eligibility
All NCSU faculty members are invited to submit an application. Places in the Institute are limited; we anticipate a maximum of 16 participants. Pairs or small teams of faculty seeking to develop a program-wide teaching/learning research project are encouraged to apply (only one application is required per team). While we seek to include participants from across the University, preference will be given to projects that have the potential to impact the largest number of students. We are especially interested in projects targeting large classes and/or students at an early stage in their academic experience.
Participants will agree to work together to share observations and ideas regarding their projects. Participants are also expected to:
- Attend all four days of the Summer Institute (May 22, 24, 29, 31)
- Submit a summary of their planned project at the completion of the Institute.
- Meet at least once during the subsequent academic year to discuss their ongoing research project.
- Make a presentation during Office of Faculty Development Spring 2013 Teaching and Learning Symposium event.
