Teaching & Learning Symposium

The Teaching and Learning Symposium is a one day event which recognizes excellent teaching on NC State’s campus.  This is accomplished through a poster session of NC State faculty doing research on their teaching, a keynote address and the presentation of several university awards: the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor award, the inductees into the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, the Holladay Medal and the Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.  During the poster session, Gertrude Cox award submissions will be on display and winner(s) will be notified.

The 2012 Teaching and Learning Symposium took place in the Talley Student Center on Wednesday, April 4th, 2012.  This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. James Zull, Professor of Biology & Biochemistry & Director of The University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education, Case Western Reserve University.

The Symposium consists of several events recognizing excellence in teaching on our campus.  The schedule of events was as follows:

  • 9:00-10:30am:  Breakfast conversation with Dr. James Zull, author of one of our spring reading circle selections, From Brain to Mind:  Using Neuroscience to Guide Change in Education.
  • 11:00am-12:00pm:  Keynote address by Dr. Zull
  • 12:00-1:30pm:  Lunch and teaching awards presentation
  • 1:30-3:00pm:  Poster sessions and Gertrude Cox Award exhibition (Gertrude Cox Award presentation will be at 2pm)
  • 2:30-3:00pm:  Ice cream social honoring Spring 2011 and Fall 2011 Thank a Teacher recipients, Gertrude Cox Award nominees, and Symposium poster presenters
