Community Engaged Scholarship goes beyond the typical domains of research and teaching to incorporate a mutually beneficial relationship with the community in order to bring social justice and resources to others. Through community engaged scholarship, we gain and share understanding of social issues and provide strategies to address them. By educating ourselves and others, we may establish relationships that will bring about transformational change.

Civic Engagement is the process of improving the quality of life for members of the community through partnering and collaborating with others to build resources, knowledge, and skills for the campus and community while remaining consistent with the mission of the institution. Civic engagement includes research, teaching, and service.

Service-Learning is teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Reflection is the process of deriving meaning and knowledge from experience and occurs before, during and after a service-learning project.

Community Partners are agencies that partner with academic courses to provide a service placement for students. The agency benefits from having a student volunteer and the student benefits from being able to integrate their academic coursework into a real world experience.

Learning Outcomes are specific student learning goals for service-learning – the three main ones are:

  • Better understanding of course concepts
  • Improved communication and problem-solving skills
  • Increased understanding their responsibility of citizenship
